beagle whippet cross - Lizzie
Lizzie and I have been in each other's lives for almost three years now. I decided to pay a visit to the local animal shelter in the midst of a serious depression because I knew something had to change in my life.
On my third day of dog-scouting, one of the workers and I were on our way to see a different dog that she thought might fit my lifestyle.
When we were a few steps down the long hallway of cages, beautiful Lizzie put her nose right up to the cage as if she had been drawn to me. The other dogs were barking but she quietly stood there looking scared.
I asked to see her and was informed that they had nick-named her "Mama Dog" because she had been dropped off at the shelter in the middle of the night with her 3 puppies. Per the policy of the state, she spent a week in the pound and had just arrived at the shelter that day.
She was timid at first with her tail tucked between her legs but within minutes, that 35 lb dog was practically in my lap.
She's smart and was easy to train. She's incredibly loyal. I can walk her anywhere without a leash and she'll stay right beside me. She's very needy and wants constant affection and she's a fast and graceful runner. Not long after I got her, I started noticing dead birds in the yard so she's a bit of a hunter as well. She's a little ornery but I sure do love her.
I used to think I saved her life, but the truth is...she saved mine.
This photo was taken today. I wanted to go outside and get a shot of her running around but it's way too cold to be outside today.
