Out and About with your Dog

Best Dog Toys

Match the needs
The best dog toys are those that match the needs of your dog. So a large Kong toy would probably not suit a Chihuahua, and a small soft dog toy would not last long with a power chewing Labrador.

You may need to try out several types of toy before you discover what your pet likes best.

Power Chewer
For example, it may be that your dog is a powerful chewer and so Kong Toys or Nylabone products are going to be ideal. You may even have to test out several shapes before you find something that goes down well. In our house anything bone-shaped is popular whereas our Nylabone ring hasn’t been touched.

For Large Dogs
The Tuffie Barn Yard Animals and Dinosaurs are for large dogs. These are big toys - we have the Tuffie Pig and our dogs love it. Again, you will need to supervise - no toy is completely indestructible - but these hold up extremely well, especially the Tiger Ring which we also have. This has a rating of 10 for extreme toughness!

Snuggle Up
Alternatively your dog may just like to snuggle up to something warm and cuddly and so one of the soft dog toys may be a better option. I know my dogs would love one of these but I’m sure with a Retriever and Labrador it wouldn’t last 5 minutes. Know your dog when you choose your dog toy!

Water Toys
Perhaps you live near the beach or even enjoy walking near a pond or lake. There are some great water toys available on the market. If your dog loves both the water and enjoys fetching and retrieving this might be a good choice.

Georgie the Golden Retriever in water

Our Golden Retriever loves the water but also loves to pull soft toys apart - she's not much of a "fetch and drop" kind of dog. She just likes to 'hang out' in the water chasing the insects whereas Jessie (our Lab-Cross) loves to dive in after things and drop them at your feet. Different dogs - different toys!

Good Old Cardboard Box!
Don’t forget if all else fails, most dogs love a good old cardboard box (just remove any staples). It does make a mess but it’s cheap, safe and great fun while it lasts.

Just Ask
And if you're buying for a friend's dog and you're not sure what to go for, just ask the owner. They'll know the kind of thing that would make the best dog toy for their pet.

What fun! So many great dog toys to choose from - our dogs are lucky to have us :)
