Bichon Frise x Shih Tzu Dog Personality - Brucey
1. What is your dog's name? My dogs name is Brucey (otherwise known as Pup, Bru, Brucilla, Angel, Scraggle....amongst many more :-) )
2. What breed is your dog? Brucey's Mummy is a Bichon frise x shih-tzu and Brucey's Daddy is a Bichon Frise making Brucey a Shichon.
3. How old is he? Brucey turned 1 on 19th August 2010 making him 17 months old this month.
4. How would you describe your dog? Brucey is very friendly and affectionate and so loving, but is wary of strangers and new dogs he doesn't know.
5. What's your dog's favourite toy? Brucey's favourite toy at the minute is an owl teddy with a squeaker in its tummy which his doggy friend Bella bought him for Christmas. It's just the right size for him to carry round, and also his old faithful blue squeaker small football he's had since a baby is always a favourite.
6. Does your dog know any tricks or have any special talents? Brucey is very clever and knows lots of tricks including; dance, meer cat pose, play dead, roll over, paws up on arm, crawl, jump, high five, wave bye bye, kiss, figure of 8 round your legs, spin, and many more, he picks up on tricks very quickly, learning more and more daily, he loves to please and impress you.
7. What's your dog like off lead on a walk? Brucey is pretty good off his lead when walking on the park with no doggy friends, sticking close by, not wandering to far and good recall but when Brucey's best doggy friend Chester comes along Brucey likes to stick like glue to Chester, who is more brave than Brucey meaning Brucey will wander further and tends to forget his name, when shouted as is too busy with Chester.
Also he is very protective of Chester and may bark at other dogs that come to close to Chester especially if Chester barks or sniffs at the other dog.
8. Where does your dog sleep? On my bed, cuddled up, head on my pillow next to me, tucked under the covers, he loves being close and snuggling his head under my neck.
9. Any nasty habits? Barking at strangers in the street and not letting anyone he doesn't know near him, is very over protective (we're working on this) and chewing his way out of crates and stair gates (Yes the metal ones)
We've got through 3 stairgates and 2 crates and gave in to him having the whole downstairs whilst we are out and this seems to of done the trick. Again think this is him being able to guard and protect the house and us and he feels unable when he is locked away.
10. Favourite treats? He's not really a big treat eater, prefers praise to treats usually but does enjoy chicken, dental sticks and jumbones.
11. From what you know of your dog's breed, is your dog a typical Bichon/Shih Tzu?
As Brucey is a cross breed dog he definitely has traits of both breeds. Very much like a Bichon we had trouble house breaking him and struggled with separation anxiety, but isn't really a yappy dog, but will warn you soon as the security light outside comes on or to any noise. He has the lovely temperament known for a Bichon Frise, and like a Shih Tzu he is very forgiving and loves spending time outside as long as he knows you're never far away.
Anything else to add? Brucey is my baby and is spoilt rotten, just do worry about the stranger problem. We are getting there by when we pass someone I stand still with him and let them pass and if he begins to bark we turn the other way. This is working well, but if anyone tries to stroke him he barks constantly sounding very nasty. He wouldn't bite, but it sounds awful.
If anyone has any tips please please do let me know. Thanks for reading x x
