Out and About with your Dog

Cleaning products that work!

No one would dispute the importance of good cleaning products if you have dogs!

So what is the best vacuum for dog hair?

  • Do you need your hoover for carpets or wooden floors (or both?)
  • Do you want a bagged hoover?
  • What's your price range?
  • Do you prefer an upright cleaner, a canister type or more of a dust buster design?

We use the appropriately named Miele S516 Cat & Dog Canister Vacuum Cleaner , and with two hairy dogs it really does an excellent job.

It has a variety of tools so you can do the small jobs, such as down the side of the sofa, as well as the bigger areas.

It cleans wooden floors as well as carpetted areas and is absolutely fantastic at sucking up dog hairs. It is a bagged hoover but don't let that put you off. The bags are extremely straight-forward to empty and replace. I highly recommend this Miele product.

Finding the right product to keep our patio garden clean has been quite difficult. We now use Formula H Disinfectant by Petlife and buy the two litre container. I have a red watering can specifically for this purpose - a good slosh of Formula H in cold water is poured over the offending area. We buy this from our local garden centre and it really does the job. Just don't mix up the watering cans and pour this over your plants! They won't like it.

Cleaning products are of course even more essential if you have a pet. Most dogs lose some hair and the amount can vary according to the time of year.

All dogs, if they're taken on walks other than round the block, will get muddy and bring this into the house. I know ours do!

We have wooden floors downstairs and carpets upstairs which is a good compromise. But you still need to decide firstly whether

a) your dogs are allowed upstairs (ours are)

b) allowed on the sofa (again ours are)

c) and finally allowed on the bed (they're allowed on in the morning with us in it - never on their own).

These rules are for our house only. So when we go to Grandma's for example the sofa and the bed are definite no-go areas.

It's good to think through these 'house rules' before your dog arrives to live with you. Although having said that, dogs are usually quite adaptable and will get the hang of new rules as long as you're consistent.
