Cycling Through The Bluebells With Golden Retriever and Labradors

Taking a breather in the bluebells
Don't forget the water!
The bluebells are out in full force in southern England so we decided to grab our bikes and do a Dog Cycle instead of our normal Dog Walk.
Cycling with dogs is such a thrill - for us as well as them. Georgie, our Golden Retriever, barked and barked when we started but after a minute or so she realised what was happening and quickly fell into step with the others.
The pace should be steady - the dogs should not be tearing along - just keep to a gentle pace that can be kept up for the time you're out. We normally go for about an hour and this includes a break in the middle.
Please make sure a) your dog is fit enough - don't do it if your dog is not used to daily off lead walks. Also if your dog is overweight I would recommend getting the weight down first in a more gentle way - eg. regular walks and reduced food intake.
b) your dog's paws are in good shape - if the nails or pads are causing a problem for your dog, don't cycle with them, it'll just make things worse.
c) you have enough water for the end of the walk. We also take a Collapsible Water Bowl for the middle of the walk and we all have a break in the middle of the woods.
Cycling with your dog is a great work out for both parties. If you're intending to go regularly then leave some gaps. Cycle one day, walk the next - let the muscles relax.
One thing is for certain - your dogs will sleep soundly when you get back! And you may want a little nap too ;-)
