Dachshund Breed Info and Picture of Maggie May

(Ohio, USA)

This is my Smooth coat Dachshund Maggie May, and she is such a wonderful dog and a joy to be around!

If you are considering getting a Dachshund here is some info that I have come to learn from research and personal experience!

1. Does this breed make a good pet?

Dachshunds make great pet they have a lot of love to give :) Dachshunds LOVE attention. My Maggie May is always next to me or well anyone who will pet her lol. She loves to snuggle and give kisses.

2. Are they good with children?

If they aren't well socialized with children some tend to get a little snippy, but if you socialize them well when they are puppies you really shouldn't have a problem.

3. How much exercise do they need?

My Dachshund is a couch potato but they should be taken on a walk a day, because this breed does tend to get lazy and fat. If they do become obese its not good because it could cause back problems.

4. Do they shed a lot?

There are three coat types

Long hair
Smooth
Wire coat

So depending on which kind you choose will decide on grooming.
I have a smooth coat and she don't shed too bad.

5. Any special things to mention?

Just remember to not have your Dachshund do a lot of jumping, because they are prone to a lot of back problems. Also try to keep them at a healthy weight ;) If you do that I am sure your Doxie will live a long happy life!

6. Any general things to mention?

Dachshunds tend to be barkers but they do make a great watch dog :D

* Fun Fact

Dachshund means Badger Dog

* Info about the breed history

Dachshunds come from Germany, were they were bread from hunting badgers. These little doggies would fearlessly go down into the Badger hole and fight the badger head on. They are so low to the ground so they can pick up the sent easyer and track down the prey, and also so they can fit down in the holes.

This dog may be fearless but the Dachshund is a sweet loving dog!

All in all I would say the Dachshund is a great family pet!! I don't know what I would do with out my Maggie May <3
