Ditchling Beacon -
for dog walking

Ditchling Beacon

Ditchling Beacon is the third-highest point on the South Downs in south-east England, behind Butser Hill (270 m; 886 ft) and Crown Tegleaze (253 m; 830 ft). It consists of a large chalk hill with a particularly steep northern face, covered with open grassland and sheep-grazing areas. Situated just south of the East Sussex village of Ditchling and to the north-east of the city of Brighton, it is the highest point in the county of East Sussex. (from Wikipedia)

What do you like about this area for exercising your dog?

It's all enclosed once you go through the gate, has great terrain for him to run around on, but a fairly level (Occasionally steep) path for us.

Amazing views too!

Do you consider it a safe place for your dog?

For the most part yes. The walking areas are cow grazing land, so you have to watch out for them. But if they are in the field by car park, the field on the other side of the road is usually clear of cattle.

Does it seem popular with other dog owners?

Not all the time. I think that weekends are popular, but during the week, it's quite empty.

What is parking like and/or buses?

Parking is usually ok, it is a pay and display car park, unless you have a National trust sticker. It can get busy on weekends, and often people park on the road a little further up, but police are discouraging this.

Are there doggy bins provided?

I think there is one in the car park, but not in the fields.

Are there any cafes and if so are they dog-friendly?

No cafe's in immediate vicinity, a good pub down in Ditchling and a few garden centres that offer food, and a good cuppa. Often an ice cream van there though.

Are there any doggy no-go areas that you know of? (eg. children’s play area)

Not that I know of.

Do you think this place is best suited to certain breeds/types of dog?

I think that small dogs may struggle with some of the terrain, but medium to large dogs should love it.

Any other points to mention?

Road is a bit tricky, and car park can fill up quickly.
