This is a talking animal, live-action film where the canine star becomes a dog with eighty times his normal strength. Fun and frolics ensue as you might expect. I haven't seen it but there are very positive reviews for this film on Amazon.

Eight Below

Eight Below is a gripping film for older children. Set in Antarctica, though filmed in Canada, Norway and Greenland, the main part of the story follows a group of sled dogs as they attempt to survive in the wilderness. A tense and moving story this has had great reviews and will not disappoint. No slushy stuff here in spite of all the snow ;)

Relocated to Scotland, the dog sets off on a perilous five hundred mile journey back to the family it knows and loves. Plenty of magical moments - both my husband and I shed a few tears during this film! Peter O'Toole stars as the rich landowner.

Film makers obviously enjoy reuniting dogs with their owners especially when long distances are involved and several adventures can happen along the way. Can Bingo, the runaway circus dog, be reunited with his beloved Chuckie after they move a thousand miles away? You can probably guess the answer!

We know a real dog called Fluke - saved at the last minute from being put down at a pound in Ireland. He was renamed Fluke by his new owner. They should have made a film about that!
Anyway, I digress! This version of Fluke is based on the James Herbert novel. A successful young family man is killed in a car crash and starts life again - as a dog! He wags his way back into his old life and family, only to find things aren't quite the same. An amusing film with plenty of opportunities for using the Kleenex. Samuel L. Jackson is the voice of Fluke's doggy friend who gives Fluke a helping paw.

Firehouse Dog seems to work on many levels and for many age groups with the themes of friendship, heroism and father/son relationships at its core. Another film using computer-generated imagery (CGI) to personify our canine friends, Firehouse Dog seems to strike the right balance between schmaltz and adventure.

My Dog Skip would be a good choice for slightly older children (eight and above?). Skip is a loveable Jack Russell who changes the life of an awkward young boy growing up during World War II. Their bond gives the boy, Willie Morris, (whose memoirs the film is based on) the confidence to come out of his shell and start embracing life. Kevin Bacon stars as the boy's over-protective father.
