Out and About with your Dog

Dog Safety For Kids

This page is all about Dog Safety For Kids. Basic rules around strange dogs are:

dog licking girl on face
- don't stare at them

- don't bend down or bend forward to touch them

- basically try and IGNORE them!

If the dog is frightened, it will not want you to pay it any attention. It is happy for you to ignore him. That is what it wants. You are not being rude to the dog!

Dog Safety For Kids - keep in mind these points:

young boy running fast 1.  Remember that dogs enjoy chasing - they think it's fun and it's a natural thing for them to do.

If you run away from a dog screaming and shouting, they'll think it's a game and will almost certainly run after you.

This might be the last thing you want them to do.

My advice is to:

- stand still

- keep your hands by your side and make a fist to protect your fingers. Or slowly fold your arms. Don't make any sudden movements

- don't look at the dog

- don't say anything

- when the dog loses interest, back away slowly

2.  If you are with your dog and another dog looks unfriendly, change direction and walk away from that dog.

Get your dog used to following you when it matters.

I use a tennis ball and hold it in front of my dog. She is then looking directly at the tennis ball, focussed on that rather than anything else.

Once we are out of danger/away from the thing I wanted to avoid, I throw the ball in the direction we are now walking and continue with our walk.

You can use food if your dog responds better to that.

3.  If you are out and you see a dog that looks lovely and you want to say hello, always ASK THE OWNER FIRST.

That dog might be very frightened or may have been treated badly by a child in the past.

Always find out if the dog is friendly by asking the owner first.

4.  If you want to say hello to a dog, and you have asked the owner first, then follow these rules:
  • hold your hand by your side and let the dog sniff you first

  • touch the dog gently UNDER its chin not on top of its head

Follow these rules on Dog Safety For Kids and you will be more confident around dogs and they will be happier too!
