Dog Walking in Stanmer Park

Dog walking in Stanmer Park and Woods
If you’re looking for a large, safe area, beautiful for humans and exciting for the dogs, then Stanmer Park and Woods in Brighton is one of the best places to walk your dog.

You have a choice of the wooded area, the park itself, or the countryside surrounding the park. Many dog walkers combine all three or try various combinations.

What do you like about this area for exercising your dog?
Stanmer is beautiful in every season and the dogs LOVE it. It’s relatively sheltered when it’s pouring with rain which is also a big plus. Lots of dog walkers use this area so it’s a social experience too if you want it to be. I have seen someone ‘walking their dog’ with their head down reading a book so it’s whatever you want it to be!

Yes. The car park can get busy so watch the vehicles, and there are some fast cyclists from time to time. Also there are sheep and cows in the surrounding countryside but these can be completely avoided in the woods and park itself.?

Does it seem popular with other dog owners?
Yes definitely!

What is parking like and/or buses?
Before we had a car, I used to take Georgie on the train to Falmer and walk from there. This is perfectly okay although you start off near the University and your dog will need to be on a lead for the first bit.

Buses include the 23,25 and 78.

There are 3 main places to park. Firstly, in the park itself accessed from the Lewes Road before it joins the A27 and signposted for Stanmer Park. Just drive into the main entrance which leads through the centre of the park and there are several places to leave your car. You can easily access the woods or the park from here (the main wooded area is up to your left as you drive in).

Secondly, turn off the A27 signposted for Hollingbury Industrial Estate(near Asda). Carry straight onto Coldean Lane as it goes down the hill but turn left just before getting back onto the A27. It is not signposted and you can easily miss it. There is a car park here for about 12 cars - it sometimes fills up especially between 10am-12pm and even when the weather’s really bad.

All paths from the car park lead through the woods and people have their favourites. Personally I keep away from the paths nearest the A27. If in doubt you’ll soon find someone to ask.

Thirdly, come off at the same place but instead of going down Coldean Lane, turn down Ditchling Road towards Ditchling itself. After 20 seconds or so you’ll see a sign for Upper Lodges. This is a bigger car park and if the other one is full this is a good alternative. Once you get out of the car, you’ll find yourself walking on a tarmac road occasionally used by residents and farm vehicles. Walk past the houses until you see a path to your left and right which will take you into the woods.

Are there doggy bins provided?
Not enough! There are 1 or 2 near the car parks but once you get into the woods and leave the car park there are no bins. Always use a branch to scoop it over to one side if the dogs go on the path in the wood itself.

Are there any cafes and if so are they dog-friendly?
There is a café in Stanmer village which is dog-friendly and I hear good reports.

Are there any doggy no-go areas that you know of? (eg. children’s play area)
On hot, sunny days we avoid the park itself because of families and picnics. Also at the weekend there are sometimes football matches. It depends on your dogs! Also, as I’ve mentioned, there is livestock in the fields around the park but they can easily be avoided by keeping to the main paths in the woods and not exploring the surrounding countryside. If in doubt just pop your dog on a lead.

Do you think this place is best suited to certain breeds/types of dog?
I’ve seen every breed here from Chihuahuas to Deerhounds. If a dog likes to walk then this is the place to go.

Any other points to mention?
Because of its doggy credentials, this is a very popular place with professional dog walkers. Many are friends so it doesn’t bother me at all, but some people may not like big groups of dogs. If you meet a big gang of dogs, the best thing to do is say hello to the walker, keep moving forward and don’t make a fuss. Most dogs just want to have a quick sniff and those that don’t will disappear in to the woods for a few minutes to avoid the crowd. The dog walker will be keeping a close eye on matters and make sure nothing happens. And they’ll know what to do if something should kick off (which it won’t!)
