Seven Groups
The breeds have all been developed according to size, temperament, physical beauty, working ability - developed that is by us - humans.
Here are the seven groups as defined by the Kennel Club of Great Britain:
- Hound
including the Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Deerhound, Greyhound, Whippet and the Saluki.
- Working
including the Rottweiler, Boxer, Bernese Mountain Dog, the Dobermann and the Leonberger.
- Terrier
including the Bedlington Terrier, Border Terrier, Jack Russell, Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, the Staffy and the West Highland Terrier.
- Gundog (Sporting Group)
including the Golden Retriever, Springer Spaniel, Labrador, Irish Red Setter, Hungarian Vizsla, Weimarana, Italian Spinone and the Pointer.
- Pastoral (Herding Group)
including the Shetland Sheepdog, Old English Sheepdog, Border Collie and the Lancashire Heeler.
- Utility (Non-Sporting Group)
including the Chow Chow, Toy Poodle, Lhasa Apso, Dalmatian, and the Miniature and Standard Schnauzers.
- Toy
including the Bichon Frise, Yorkshire Terrier and the King Charles Spaniel.
