Dog Training Aids

There are several dog training aids we currently use at home. The two that get the most frequent use are the Pet Corrector Spray and the Aboistop Anti-bark collar.

The Pet Corrector Spray is to be used judiciously. It is a very powerful product letting out a very loud blast of compressed air which interrupts your dog's unwanted behaviour.

We have used it in various ways: for Georgie when she was younger and insisted on jumping up to greet everyone she met; we now use it mainly with Jessie who if left unchecked would bark for many minutes if someone came to the door. We now give a very short burst on the can and she stops immediately. It can take visitors by alarm as well so be prepared to explain what you’re doing!

I also carry it with me on our dog walks just so I'm prepared for any sort of trouble. Occasionally Jessie has been known to defend her possessions - for example if she finds a tennis ball - and this spray will stop them in their tracks. I wear it in a Holster which makes me feel a bit like a cowboy but at least I don't have to find another pocket for it.

I also recommended it to a friend whose dog was barking at the neighbours when they were trying to enjoy a nice summer's afternoon in the garden. They reported that in the end, simply picking up the can stopped the barking immediately.

The other dog training aid we’ve found particularly useful is the Aboistop Anti-Bark Collar which is designed to let out a spray of citronella which not only makes an unpleasant sound but also has a strong smell which dogs don't like.

We often use it at night since Jessie is very territorial and will bark at the slightest sound. Wearing this definitely inhibits her and enables us all to get a decent night's sleep. It puts Georgie in charge (our Golden Retriever) who is less inclined to bark except in extreme cases. When I put it on Jessie, her tail wags and she immediately goes and lays down and falls asleep. It’s almost as though she’s been given permission to switch off and properly relax.

The Aboistop is available in two sizes: the Standard size which comes in white and the Compact size which is a black unit. The Standard is designed for dogs weighing over 8kg and is slightly heavier (holding a greater quantity of spray) than the other one. The Compact version (it's a smaller size) is I believe more expensive and is designed for all sizes and breeds.

We actually have the Compact unit for our Labrador-Cross and we've used it with the Golden Retriever as well. The Retriver however seemed totally petrified of it and hardly moved when she realised what happened when you barked. If you have a very sensitive dog, this may not be the right product.

If you are unsure ask at your local pet shop or contact a local animal behaviourist.

Now have a look through the training aids on display below. There are loads of items there - good luck in finding something that will be of use.
