On the plus side she got used to train and bus travel which many dogs don't have the opportunity to try.

Because of her nausea and the fact that we were using hired cars, she either sat on my husband's lap or, when she became too big for this, between my husband's legs. We would simply take lots of towels, kitchen roll and stop often for fresh air. As you can imagine, each trip was a major event.

I'm pleased to say that after three or four car trips the sickness suddenly stopped, we bought our own car and she started sitting in the back. We now take both dogs on long car journeys -stopping every three or four hours for breaks - and they've negotiated set sides in the back which they keep to. The car seems to be a very comfortable place for them to be.There are several products for the car that will make travelling with your dog both safer not to mention cleaner.

Dog Transit Boxes
Transit boxes can be fitted in the back of your car to contain your dog. This is particularly useful if they are lively or like to chew, or if they suffer from car sickness.

Hair and dirt will be kept in one place and a rubber mat can be fitted to prevent your dog from sliding. Fleecy bedding can also be placed on the floor of the box to create a home-from-home feel.

Most companies will work closely with the customer to fit out their car or van.



Guards
Many cars have guards which divide up your car and keep the dog from distracting the driver. They can be purchased to fit the make and model of your car and are usually of a wired or tubular design.

Keeping your car clean
There are several products for the back of your car which help to reduce the amount of hair and dirt coming in.

Boot liners keep the rear of the car covered and 'mud larks' have a waterproof backing which can be used as a rear seat cover as well as offering protection for the boot area.

Lintran Products offers a 'Dri-Dog Bag' which you simply place over your dog (their head is out) and when they shake in the car it goes on the towelling bag rather than the interior of your car!

Motorway travel

It has a list of country walks close to the motorway system and is ideal if you are in an unfamiliar area and your dog needs some exercise.
