DVDs for kids - with dogs as their stars!
DVDs for kids are certainly plentiful. But on this website we're only interested in films that have dogs as the true stars. Here are a selection for children (and adults) who love dogs. They're perfect for a rainy Sunday, a sunny Monday or a chilly Tuesday!

101 Dalmatians is a classic Disney DVD telling the story of Pongo and Perdita and their pups. The two lonely Dalmatians meet in a London park and arrange for their owners to marry so they can all live together. With the nasty Cruella De Vil wreaking her havoc, this is a timeless story which I remember seeing 'back in the day!'
101 Dalmatians 'Live Action' with Glenn Close is also obviously available. You'll need to take your pick between the two DVDs.
Lady And The Tramp (2 Disc Special Edition) (1955)

Lady And The Tramp is another classic Disney DVD telling the romantic story of Lady, the sophisticated Cocker Spaniel, who falls for the freedom-loving mongrel from the wrong side of town. A fantastic film for all ages to enjoy.
Snow Dogs (2002)

Snow Dogs is a Disney hit telling the story of successful dentist, Ted Brooks,(Cuba Gooding Jr) who travels to Alaska to claim his inheritance. A pack of sled dogs was not quite what he had in mind however! This is a funny feel-good movie with excellent special effects and a delight for the children and the grown ups.
Snow Buddies/Air Buddies Double Pack (2006)

Well probably not classic Disney but fun and enjoyable nonetheless, Air Buddies and Snow Buddies feature the cute Golden Retriever pups that all share a fantastic secret - they can talk! With shared themes of the importance of teamwork, faith and courage, both DVDs will be enjoyed by the children.
Underdog (2007)

Underdog, 'saving the world one paw at a time!' stars Jim Belushi who adopts Shoeshine and takes him home as a companion for his son. This is a talking animal, live-action film where the canine star becomes a dog with eighty times his normal strength. Fun and frolics ensue as you might expect. I haven't seen it but there are very positive reviews for this film on Amazon.
Homeward Bound (1993)

Shadow the Golden Retriever, Chance the Bulldog and Sassy the cat embark on an epic journey to find their way home. Fantastic location shots with an abundance of wildlife this is Disney weaving their animal magic. Don Ameche, Michael J Fox, and Sally Field are the three voices in this adaption of Sheila Burnford's classic animal-adventure novel The Incredible Journey.
Eight Below (2006)

Eight Below is a gripping film for older children. Set in Antarctica, though filmed in Canada, Norway and Greenland, the main part of the story follows a group of sled dogs as they attempt to survive in the wilderness. A tense and moving story this has had great reviews and will not disappoint. No slushy stuff here in spite of all the snow ;)

Lassie (2005)

A family is forced to sell their pet dog, Lassie which later escapes from its new owner. Relocated to Scotland, the dog sets off on a perilous five hundred mile journey back to the family it knows and loves. Plenty of magical moments - both my husband and I shed a few tears during this film! Peter O'Toole stars as the rich landowner.
Bingo (1991)

Film makers obviously enjoy reuniting dogs with their owners especially when long distances are involved and several adventures can happen along the way. Can Bingo, the runaway circus dog, be reunited with his beloved Chuckie after they move a thousand miles away? You can probably guess the answer!
Fluke (1995)

We know a real dog called Fluke - saved at the last minute from being put down at a pound in Ireland. He was renamed Fluke by his new owner. They should have made a film about that!
Anyway, I digress! This version of Fluke is based on the James Herbert novel. A successful young family man is killed in a car crash and starts life again - as a dog! He wags his way back into his old life and family, only to find things aren't quite the same. An amusing film with plenty of opportunities for using the Kleenex. Samuel L. Jackson is the voice of Fluke's doggy friend who gives Fluke a helping paw.
Firehouse Dog (2007)

Firehouse Dog seems to work on many levels and for many age groups with the themes of friendship, heroism and father/son relationships at its core. Another film using computer-generated imagery (CGI) to personify our canine friends, Firehouse Dog seems to strike the right balance between schmaltz and adventure.
My Dog Skip (2000)

My Dog Skip would be a good choice for slightly older children (eight and above?). Skip is a loveable Jack Russell who changes the life of an awkward young boy growing up during World War II. Their bond gives the boy, Willie Morris, (whose memoirs the film is based on) the confidence to come out of his shell and start embracing life. Kevin Bacon stars as the boy's over-protective father.
Cats And Dogs (2001)

Starring Jeff Goldblum with the voices of Susan Sarandon and Alec Baldwin, Cats and Dogs explores the timeless rivalry between the two species. A madcap adventure film for the whole family it uses live animals, animatronic puppets and digital wizardry. Lots of special effects and action will please dog and cat lovers of all ages.
Good Boy! (2003)

Imagine if you will a dog called Hubble, a planet called Sirius (The Dog Star), and a canine leader - The Greater Dane - voiced by Vanessa Redgrave. Good Boy! investigates the progress of dogs on earth after they were sent to colonise our planet thousands of years ago. The Jim Henson Creature Shop created the amazing talking dogs and Matthew Broderick leads the cast of canine voices.
Because Of Winn-Dixie

Directed by Wayne Wang and starring Jeff Daniels and newcomer Anna Sophia Robb, Because Of Winn-Dixie is the story of a young girl who spreads joy around her local community with her newly acquired canine friend, Winn-Dixie. The film is based on the bestselling novel by Kate DiCamillo and has received excellent reviews. Check it out!
