Friston ForestView of the White Horse, taken from from Friston Forest
The walk I have chosen is Friston Forest in East Sussex, England. The scenery is beautiful and the trees look amazing, particularly in the Autumn. The length of the walk can vary depending on which route you choose. The walk that we choose takes about 1 ½ hours. The company is great as we usually do this walk with Hilary and her girls!!
Where is Friston Forest? Travelling from Brighton on the A259, you drive over the narrow bridge which crosses the Cuckmere River. You are now coming into the Seven Sisters Country Park. On the left is the village of Litlington. Follow this road for a few minutes and on the right is the carpark for Friston Forest. The number 12 bus from Brighton to Eastbourne also stops nearby. Do you consider it a safe place for your dog? Yes, the route that we normally take is deep in the forest, but there are footpaths. Does it seem popular with other dog owners? Yes. I think that every time we have been, we have seen several dogs What is parking like? The parking is fine, although there is a charge of about £2.00. There are plenty of spaces. Are there doggy bins provided? This is probably a down side if you are the sort of person who picks up poo wherever you go. I personally do if it is in the path of any walkers. There is only one bin near the car park, so sometimes I end up carrying it until we reach the bin! Are there any cafes and if so are they dog-friendly? No there are no cafes, but there are some nice picnic areas near the car park, some of which have barbecues.. Are there any doggy no-go areas that you know of? (eg. children’s play area) Generally the dogs and children are quite safe, although a newly built climbing construction has just been added near to the car park. Do you think this place is best suited to certain breeds/types of dog? I think that the forest is great for all breeds of dog. Any other points to mention? There are benches scattered around, so you can stop off for a flask of coffee or snack, which we regularly do! There are also toilets near to the car park.
If you have any dog walking recommendations in Sussex, please get in touch and I'll send you a short questionnaire! Thank you to Monty's Mum, Ali, for this piece on Friston Forest, East Sussex.
