Out and About with your Dog

Green Ridge, Brighton
- what's it like for dogs?

Where is Green Ridge?
Access to Green Ridge is from the Hilltop Cafe at the top of Dyke Road, just before the roundabout that takes you onto the A27. It is an area of managed grassland and features the Patcham windmill.

What do you like about this area for exercising your dog?
It's close to the centre of Brighton so you don't need to drive far; there's a dew pond for water dogs; the views are great; it's well looked after.

Do you consider it a safe place for your dog?
Yes, I usually park in the Hilltop Cafe Car Park and keep the dogs on leads until I'm clear of Dyke Road which is busy. Once the dogs are on the move I let them off.

Does it seem popular with other dog owners?
Yes, there are other dogs walking here. It's a well established area for exercising your dog.

What is parking like?
I usually park in the Hilltop Cafe at the top of Dyke Road although I think this is meant for people using the cafe.

Are there doggy bins provided?
Yes there are bins in sensible areas - ie. on the walk itself not in the carpark

Are there any cafes and if so are they dog-friendly?
The Hilltop cafe has tables outside and I often notice people sitting there with their dogs.

Are there any doggy no-go areas that you know of? (eg. children’s play area)
There's a dew pond that you may/may not want your dog to go into; there was a field of cows to the left as you walked towards the Windmill but they were behind a barbed wire fence. A small dog could get through if (s)he wanted to. In April/May there may be sheep so keep an eye out.

Do you think this place is best suited to certain breeds/types of dog?
This is a fantastic place for all dogs.

Any other points to mention?
If you walk straight ahead past the windmill you'll get to a minor residential road and you may want to turn back at this point. A walk there, and back to the carpark is in the region of 40/45 minutes.

Many people take the footbridge on the left across to Waterhall where there is further walking opportunities and another dew pond.
