Lakeland Terrier Breed Profile - Curly

Curly the lakeland terrier
A very small terrier, Curly is 14.52 inches tall, weighs only 6.7kg at the moment, he's 1 1/2, he is wire/curly haired, non-moult, needs to be clipped every few months, or hand stripped which is the proper way!
He is an incredibly affectionate and happy little dog, loves to sleep between my ankles in bed, he has his own, but doesn't stay in it for long!
This breed still is more of a hunting dog rather than a pet, cannot be trusted around cats or small furry animals, not sure they'd survive!
This breed originated in the Lake District originally called Fell or Patterdale Terrier. Lots of Patterdale owners get confused and call their dogs Lakelands when they're not!
Lakeland terriers are like small miniature versions of Airedales (Patterdales/Working Lakelands are usually similar size, rough coated, black x-breed terriers generally used by the travelling community to hunt!)
Pedigree Lakelands don't come in black anymore at least not in this country. They come in many colours and also many have a saddle on their back. Curly, our Lakeland, has a saddle if you let his hair grow long, otherwise he is a reddish grizzle colour.
These terriers look like teddy bears, but are not weak or weedy, they are quite fearless of anything. I think they suffer from small man syndrome! In Curly's head he is huge like a Great Dane!
Unfortunately they are on the Kennel Club's endangered list, probably because although cute, they are a bit of a handful! I wouldn't be without mine though, and in fact plan on getting another in the future (don't tell the hub!)
