Making Your Own Dog Food
Making your own dog food is becoming increasingly popular these days.
Click here for the Homemade Dog Treats section. My ears pricked up the other day as I turned on the TV to provide background to Georgie and Jessie’s daily game in the front room. The Alan Titchmarsh Show - a British teatime chat show - had a feature on making your own dog food. Alan Titchmarsh and Stephanie Mehanna donned aprons and made a delicious Mutt Loaf as featured below. They even invited three hungry dogs onto the show to try out the recipe! Needless to say it went down very well! These recipes for homemade dog food are taken from Stephanie’s book Pupcakes available both in the UK and the US. Mutt-BallsTake some of the mixture above and roll into small balls.Place on a greased baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven 180C (350F), Gas Mark 4 for 15-20 mins until golden brown. Remove balls from the oven and leave to cool. Transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator. Alternatively, place in resealable freezer bags and freeze for up to 6 weeks until required. Gourmutt GravyTo top your regular dog food or your MuttloafPlace left over chicken/lamb bones in a large stock pot, add a few vegetables and cover with water, simmer for 45 mins-1 hour. Important: do not add salt. Discard bones. Blend stock (including veg) to make gravy. Freeze in portions and use as required. Don’t use gravy granules as these are high in salt. To finish: When the Muttloaf comes out of the oven, let it cool and turn out onto dog plate/bowlServe with a couple of muttballs.
