Pet Friendly Accommodations Questions and Answers

1. What is the pet fee? Is it a flat rate fee or a per day fee?

How much you are charged depends on the hotel itself. Sometimes the charge is a flat rate no matter how long you stay; other times it may be based per day. Some hotels may require you to pay a non-refundable deposit fee. The amount you pay may also be determined by the size and breed of your pet.

2. Does the hotel or resort that I am considering offer activities for my pet so that this will be the best pet friendly vacation ever for everyone?

Pet activities vary at each location of each of the best pet friendly hotel chains. You can research this at the hotel’s website or even call the hotel directly. Many accommodations who offer activities for the four legged family members typically promote these events on their web pages.

3. What are the rules which apply to my little sweetheart being alone in the room while we’re out?

Some hotels require that all animals be monitored at all times while they are in the hotel, even in your bedroom. If a hotel does allow you to leave your pet unattended, it is best to house it in a crate for the short time that you are gone. This is a good rule of thumb just in case a housekeeper or other staff member has to enter your room. It will also prevent your pet from destroying the room if he or she has separation anxiety.

4. Is there an area for my dog to exercise?

This is very important to know. Some hotels actually have areas set aside so that dogs can run and have fun free of the highways. Many other pet friendly accommodations are situated near beautiful parks which are within easy walking distance of the hotels. Before booking your hotel, you should find out what exercise options are available for your canine. Remember – a well exercised dog is a happy dog.

5. How is your dog’s behavior? Does your dog have territory issues?

You don’t want your dog to bark all night because he can hear people moving outside. This will disturb you and other patrons at the hotel. Only you know how your dog’s behavior is, and this should be taken into account before your book your hotel room. If this is an issue for you, you probably want to see about the possibility of getting an isolated room or consider pet friendly hotels which offer individual lodging units.
