Pet Sitters

Pet sitters are one option when you're going away. After all, you may not want the dogs to come with you on every holiday!

The advantage of a good pet sitter is that the dogs can stay in the same routine, with the same exercise, feeding and grooming patterns that you have already established.

It is also a useful service if you have other pets such as cats and horses who can not so easily be left with friends!

Your home is of course occupied while you are away so it is less vulnerable to break-ins.

In the UK

A pet sitting company called Nina's Nannies for Pets offers a Pet and House Sitting Service. It was established in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire during 1998, to provide a complete pet care package tailored to suit your individual needs. They cover the South of England and have an ongoing association with veterinary practices and animal charities. If you live in this part of the country, they are definitely worth checking out.

They are also part of Pet Sitters International or (PSI) which is dedicated to educating professional pet sitters and promoting, supporting and recognizing excellence in pet sitting.

A dog walking friend uses a company called Animal Angels who she highly recommends. She was particularly impressed with the care that Eva, who is quite frail, received when they went on holiday.

'When going away we use a company called 'Animal Angels'. Initially we had a form to complete giving details of our home, animals and their routines. We also had, and continue to have, discussions with the office staff so that they can assess the best person or people to sit for us.

For any new sitter there is an initial meeting - like an interview - so that you can assess them in your own home and see what they're like with your animals.

You pay an agency fee, and then a daily fee to the sitter. They will follow your routine as you instruct. They have been CRB vetted and carry Public Liability Insurance. We like the security of backup - if they have a problem, are taken ill etc, then the agency will send in someone else.

We have had several sitters over the years. Mostly they are retired people who appear to have been successful in previous careers and still want challenges (I just want to sit in front of the TV when I retire!).

Our best sitter to date is a youngish (30s) man who, when Eva was ill, took her to the vet. The nurse thought he had been a friend of mine because he was so gentle with the dog!

It's probably a bit more expensive than kennels - about £50 a day - but with the added security of someone looking after your house. We would not do otherwise now.'
