Sheepcote Valley, BrightonFind gear for your outdoor adventure dog at Ruff Wear.
Sheepcote Valley, Brighton (aka Race Hill) - what's it like for dogs? What do you like about this area for exercising your dog? This has been one of my staple dog walks for years. The views are amazing, the people are friendly, the dogs LOVE it - as far as I'm concerned its one of THE best dog walks in Brighton. Do you consider it a safe place for your dog? This is a very safe place to walk your dog. There may be horses - since it is part of the Brighton race course area - and occasionally lads on BMX bikes. Generally speaking however this is a very safe place to walk your dog. Does it seem popular with other dog owners? Yes, this is a very popular place but because it's so vast it never feels busy.
What is parking like and/or buses? Before we had a car, I used to walk down to Churchill Square with Georgie and jump on the 22 bus. This takes you right along Warren Road. A good place to get off is past the Wilson Avenue turning, where there's an area of green on your left and houses, and the car park on your right. (if you're coming from Elm Grove direction) The best car park is probably the one I've just described. If you're coming from Elm Grove along Warren Avenue, pass the turning for Wilson Avenue on your right, and just opposite the houses on your left is the car park. It can get full but in five years I've only had to park in the street twice. Alternatively try the car park in East Brighton Park and walk up through Sheepcote Valley rather than down. Are there doggy bins provided? There are bins in the car park but none on the walk itself. Are there any cafes and if so are they dog-friendly? Down in East Brighton Park there's a cafe and if you walk across towards Ovingdean and Roedean there's a cafe. I'm not sure about their dog-friendliness because I've never used them. Are there any doggy no-go areas that you know of? (eg. children's play area) You might want to avoid the golf course on the top - and the horses are exercised close by as well. Both are on the left as you enter from Warren Road and both can easily be avoided. Very occasionally they'll be a horse rider meandering through the valley so keep an eye out. It happens very occasionally though. Do you think this place is best suited to certain breeds/types of dog? This is a fantastic place for all dogs. Points to mention On a windy, rainy day this walk can be tough! It's very exposed and the proximity to the sea means the wind just shoots across the area. Sometimes it's exactly what the doctor ordered; but other times Stanmer Woods might be the best alternative. Here's a video I took in May 2012 after days of heavy rain - the dogs LOVE it as you can see but you'll need your wellies! Visit my Dog Video page to see how stunning Sheepcote Valley is on a sunny day! Other things to be aware of This walk is also very popular with professional dog walkers but because the area is so vast you can avoid them if you want! Many of them we know so it's not a problem for us! There are sometimes sheep in contained areas (it's an electrified fence) but you'll see them as soon as you walk onto the area and they can easily be avoided if necessary.
