St Nicholas Rest Garden
St Nicholas Rest Garden is a haven of peace and tranquility right in the centre of Brighton. Where is it? The Rest Garden is in Dyke Road opposite St Nicholas Church Yard just below Clifton Terrace. What do you like about this area for exercising your dog? This is a handy place if you're in the centre of town and have been wandering through with your dog. Lots of locals also use it and love it. It's a very pretty spot, well-looked after, not tremendously big but enough for a ball game and a good run. Do you consider it a safe place for your dog? As long as the big iron gate on Dyke Road is closed then this is an enclosed, safe space for dogs.
St Nicholas Churchyard, Brighton Does it seem popular with other dog owners? Yes there are lots of regulars who use it. You can also walk in the Churchyard opposite the garden which is dog friendly as well. Are there doggy bins provided? Yes there are two doggy bins in the garden. Are there any cafes and if so are they dog-friendly? There is no cafe in the garden. Are there any doggy no-go areas that you know of? (eg. children’s play area) Not in the Rest Garden. Do you think this place is best suited to certain breeds/types of dog? I've seen all dogs here - from big Labradoodles to Yorkshire Terriers and all sizes in between. Any other points to mention?
Gardening in the Rest Garden If you live in the area, the St Nicholas Rest Garden needs volunteer gardeners! They are part of a group called the St Nicholas Green Spaces Association - SNGSA . There's no joining fee, it is jut a group of people who want to look after and improve the spaces. They sometimes work together with the Park Ranger doing things like spreading wild flower seeds, making bird - feeders and boxes, building a bug hotel. They also have small stalls at the church fetes, and this year (2010) ran a refreshment tent during the Festival when the Globe Touring performed in the Rest Garden. Sarah Chrisp, one of the coordinators, writes: "A small team meet every Wednesday, and garden in the three areas - there is a Children's Garden at the back of the play area, the upper walk way above the Rest Garden, and the main Churchyard. We start at around 10 am and have a picnic at 1pm. I go in at other times too, and the Children's Garden is tended most days. Do join us if you can!
Sarah's dog, Stella, in the Rest Garden It is all very low key. There are about 60 members of SNGSA and a handful of them work in the gardens, but many many people enjoy the spaces, and have appreciated the changes made in recent years. We are also keen to get more people involved and want to hold more events. We would like to hold theatre and music, literary and child -friendly events next summer. We need help raising money through grants etc to restore the tombs, and maintain the gardens, especially as the Council will be facing even more financial cuts. We also plan to start a group this summer, focussing on bio-diversity, encouraging more wild-life into the area".
