Sussex Walks

Until you know a walk very well, you may not want to let your dog off the lead. Always be prepared for what might be round the corner!

South Downs Way
Wide grassy or flinty tracks on chalk downland, mostly grazed by sheep on the hills with arable crops below. The western part of the downs is rolling farmland, the West Sussex Downs are dominated by a steep, often wooded scarp with views across the Weald below, while the East Sussex Downs are classic open grassland running down to the sea cliffs.

Ditchling Beacon
At 248 metres (814 feet) it is the third highest point along the South Downs. The views are fantastic and it's an amazing place for a walk. It does get busy however, especially in the summer, and watch out for the cows. Georgie discovered the fun of cow pats on this walk (you can probably imagine what happened!)

Devil's Dyke

North of Brighton, on the South Downs, West Sussex
An historic beauty spot on the South Downs Way, named after the huge dry valley that carves its way through ridges of rolling chalk grassland. This is a stunning walk that we've done many times.

Cissbury Ring
Set on a chalk promontory on the South Downs three miles north of Worthing, Cissbury Ring has great views across to Beachy Head and the west of the Isle of Wight.

Harting Down
Harting Down, just off the B2141, south of South Harting village, is one of the largest areas of ancient chalk downland owned by the National Trust.

Drovers Estate
The Drovers Estate near Singleton, Chichester, is part of a patchwork of agricultural land dominated by large stands of woodland.

Slindon Estate
The Slindon Estate, off the A29 near Arundel, consists of a large expanse of sweeping downland divided by dry valleys.

East Head
East Head near West Wittering, is a small but significant sand and shingle spit at the entrance to Chichester Harbour.

Dogs on Brighton Beach

Why can't life be simple??

In Brighton, taking your dog on the beach in the summer (between May 1st and 30th September) is a needlessly complicated affair. To obey the rules by the book, you would need to walk on and off separate bits of the beach.

These are the beaches you can go on - (apparently they're marked with signs in green and white).

  • beaches between the west wall of Brighton Marina and up to the large groyne at the bottom of Dukes mound.

  • the beach in front and to the East of the Meeting Place Cafe, up to the large groyne with the lifering on.

  • the beach to the east of the Lawns Cafe, at the bottom of St John's Road, Hove promenade.

  • the beach in front of the King Alfred car park.

  • the beach to the east of Hove Lagoon.

  • dogs are allowed on the undercliff pass but must be on a lead.
  • I took this photo of the notice board on the sea front which 'helps' people know which beach they can take their dog on. Why can't we just walk from one end of Brighton beach to the other? But don't get me started on that!
